The People's Republic of Bangladesh, a parliamentary republic, has had a new prime minister since 17 February 2026: Tarique Rahman. He succeeded Muhammad Yunus, the Nobel laureate who led Bangladesh's transition to democratic governance after the July Uprising in 2024 and served as Chief Adviser of the interim government from August 2024.

Bangladesh is currently undergoing its most significant political restructuring since independence. Following the "Monsoon Revolution" of 2024 and an 18-month interim period. The general elections held on 12 February 2026, restored a civilian government. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a dominant position, winning 212 seats in the 300-member Jatiya Sangsad (the House of the Nation and the unicameral legislative body of Bangladesh). The administration is now implementing the July Charter, a series of constitutional reforms aimed at decentralizing power and ensuring judicial independence.
