About Western Asia

Western Asia on the Globe
The map shows the southwestern part of Asia. The region is known by many names: West Asia, Western Asia, Southwest Asia, Middle East, or Near East. The southwesternmost part of Asia is a region at the crossroads between Asia, Africa, and Europe. The terms have to some extent a similar notion as 'Middle East.'

Western Asia borders the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea to the west, the Black Sea, the Caucasus, and the Caspian Sea to the north. In the east, it is bounded by the Eastern Highlands of Iran, and in the south by the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean.

The regions of Western Asia include Asia Minor, also known as Anatolia, the mountainous Caucasus region, and the Eastern Mediterranean, also known as the Levant. It also includes the historical region of ancient Mesopotamia, the Armenian Highlands, the historical region of Syria, and the geographical and historical region of Palestine. The Sinai and the Arabian Peninsulas, with the Arabian desert ecoregion, and the Iranian Highlands are part of Western Asia. (see maps below).
