Regions of Western Asia
Western Asia has several distinct regions. Each with its own geography and history.
Asia Minor (Anatolia)
Asia Minor is a large peninsula between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. It forms the westernmost part of Asia, largely corresponding to modern-day
Turkey.
Caucasus Region
The Caucasus Region is a mountainous area between the Black and the Caspian Sea. The Caucasus is home to Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and some parts of southern Russia.
Eastern Mediterranean (Levant)
The Eastern Mediterranean, also known as the
Levant, is a coastal region in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea. The area includes the Middle Eastern nations of present-day Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, and Jordan.
Mesopotamia
Mesopotamia is the land between the
Tigris and
Euphrates rivers; it is located in present-day Iraq and parts of Syria, Turkey, and Iran. As part of the
Fertile Crescent, it was home to some of the world's earliest civilizations, including Sumer, Akkad, Babylon, and Assyria. These cultures made significant contributions to writing, law, and urban development.
Armenian Highlands
The Armenian Highlands are a vast mountainous plateau encompassing
Armenia, eastern
Turkey, and northwestern
Iran. The tableland is known for its historical connection to ancient Armenia.
Dunes in the Rub' al Khali desert, also known as the "Empty Quarter". This vast sand desert stretches across much of southern Saudi Arabia and extends into Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. The Empty Quarter is one of the largest contiguous sand deserts in the world with huge dunes and an arid, inhospitable environment.

Syria (Historical Region)
The historical region encompassing modern-day Syria and parts of neighboring countries. The region played a central role in ancient trade routes and various empires.
Palestine (Geographical and Historical Region): The historical region of Palestine is located between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River in the eastern Mediterranean. For millennia the area has been a crossroads of civilizations and mayor religious traditions: Islam, Christianity and Judaism.
Sinai Peninsula
The Sinai Peninsula is a
land bridge between Africa and Asia, forming part of modern Egypt, known for its rugged mountains and desert landscapes.
Arabian Peninsula
The Arabian Peninsula is the largest peninsula in the world, covering Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait. It includes vast desert ecoregions, such as the Rub' al Khali (Empty Quarter), the world's largest contiguous sand desert.
Iranian Highlands
The Iranian Highlands are a mountainous plateau covering much of Iran, eastern Turkey, Afghanistan, and parts of Pakistan. It is known for its rugged landscapes and historical significance in
Persian civilization.
